Vedic Math Tricks-Multiplying a number by lesser number of 9's
In this blog we will learn Vedic Math Trick for Multiplying a number by lesser number of 9's. Here we will adopt the method which is different from what we have learnt in our schools.
To multiply a number, with the lesser number of 9's as there are number of digits in the number let us start with an example.
Suppose we want to multiply 786 with 99 i.e. 786 x 99. Note that the number of 9's is less as the number of digits in 786. Follow the below steps :
- Step -1 Place a colon two digits to the right of 786 (as there are number of 9's -2 in 99). Therefore we get
7 : 86
- Step -2 Enclose it with a colon on the right to get
- Step -3 Increase the left part of the semicolon by 1 i.e. add 1 to 7. Here in this case we get
- Step -4 Align the enclosing colon of the original number with the colon of the new number as below
- Step -5 Subtract 8 from 786 and 86 from 100.
Another example
Let us try the same method with one more example i.e 34185 x 999
- Step -1 Place a colon three digits to the right of 34185 (as there are number of 9's(3 in 999). Therefore we get
34 : 185
- Step -2 Enclose it with a colon on the right to get
- Step -3 Increase the left part of the semicolon by 1 i.e. add 1 to 35. Here in this case we get
For subtracting 185 from 1000, you can follow the same Vedic method as we have learnt in one of our blogs.
