Vedic Math Tricks-Multiplying a number by greater number of 9's

In this blog we will learn Vedic Math Tricks-Multiplying  a number by greater number of 9's. Here we will adopt the method which is different from what we have learnt in our schools.

To multiply a number, with the greater number of 9's as there are number of digits in the number let us start with an example.

Suppose we want to multiply 386 with 9999. Note that the number of 9's is greater as the number of digits in 386. Follow the below steps :

Step -1 First of all we make the number of digits equal. To do so we will attach one zero(0) to the left of 386. Now we have to multiply 0386 with 9999.

                                          0386 x 9999

Step -2 We will now perform the same method as we have learnt in one of our blog for multiplication with same number of 9's.

Subtract 1 from the number 386. i.e 386 - 1 = 385

Step -2 Subtract 0386 from 10000 i.e. 10000 - 0386 = 9614

Step -3 Combine the results from both the steps i.e 385 and 9614

Therefore, 386 x 9999 = 3859614

Another example

Let us try the same method with one more example i.e 678 x 99999 

Step -1 First of all we make the number of digits equal. To do so we will attach two zeros(00) to the left of 678. Now we have to multiply 00678 with 99999.

                                          00678 x 99999

Step -2 We will now perform the same method as we have learnt in one of our blog for multiplication with same number of 9's.

Subtract 1 from the number 678. i.e 678 - 1 = 677

Step -2 Subtract 00678 from 10000 i.e. 10000 - 00678 = 99322

Step -3 Combine the results from both the steps i.e 677 and 99322

Therefore, 678 x 99999 = 67799322
